Home

On my journeys, I often pass regions with very different climates. Tempertures may range from -20° to more than 40°C. Snow and rain is as possible as dry heat.

Quite a challenge for the choice of cloth to take with me, as they should also be little and lightweight. Of course this only works if most cloth can be combined with each other: In the coldest case, I virtually wear all my cloth and if it is warm I wear only one layer. I try not to transport dirty cloth, but wash them always as soon as possible. This works only if the cloth dry fast.

Rain protection

Following the principle above, a rain jacket should only protect you from rain and wind, but not be warm at the same time. If it rains, I often cycle with a T-shirt and the Goretex jacket, because cycling keeps you warm.

On the picture above you can see on the left my Goretex jacket, that I use for mountaineering and on the right, the jacket, that I use for cycle tours. The difference is quite remarkable: The first weights 900gr and is three times as voluminous. The second weights only 350gr!

Cold protection

Fleece jackets are a cool thing. The are warm and dry very quick. Thanks to windstopper, a todays jacket is about half as voluminous as a compareable jacket used to be.

Because I have very sensitive Hands, I need a lot of gloves: cycling gloves, if it is warm, wndstopper-fleece gloves if it gets cold and wind- and water proof covers if it gets worse.

Cycling pants

When I cycle, I always wear cycling shorts. If it is too cold for shorts only, I wear additional windstopper pants.I like this pants very much: you don't sweat too much and they keep you warm even at very low temperatures.

Shoes

Because I use click-pedals, I travel with SPD-shoes. I have choosen a semi high shoe which has a stiff base but can also be used for short walks.

As a second pair of shoes I have sandals with me. Same here: there are big differences in terms of volume...

Cloth for the 'civilization'

Often, it is not appropriate to walk arround in shorts. For these occasions I have some 'normal' cloth with me. Choose some lightweight trekking trousers instead of a pair of jeans.
